The Dyslexic Logic Handwriting Sheets provide a structured way of practicing letter formation.
In the early stages of practicing letter shapes start big. Write on walls with water, write in the air with ribbons etc. Link learning letter shapes to learning letter sounds. Put on ‘big blue boots’ and stomp around when exploring ‘b’, lick lollypops when looking at ‘l’ and tap-dance like tigers when learning ‘t’.
Then use sand, playdough and other malleable materials to provide risk free opportunities to explore letter shapes. Then use a whiteboard so that children can work with letter sizes they are comfortable with, without worrying about lines or relative letter size. Being able to ‘wipe’ and fix also reduces concern about making mistakes.
Sitting down with a worksheet should be the very last stage, when children are already spontaneously mark making but before they start building unhelpful ‘incorrect’ motor memory for letter forms. Worksheets are dull. Add background music. Keep sessions short and frequent.
The Dyslexic Logic Handwriting Sheets are designed to be used alongside the Dyslexic Logic Font for text resources. This provides children with consistency, minimising the differences between letters like ‘f’, ‘g’ and ‘a’, which can add to confusion, reduces reversibility and keeps handwriting simple.
